I just finished this book, you should read it too. It's actually not about IBM, but rather about power/money, information, doublespeak and corporate ethics. About how IBM, through Thomas J. Watson (CEO at this moment), ended up concluding a letter to Adolf Hitler with "My wife and my family join in best wishes for you." on July 5, 1937.

First, the side note: if like me you've been slacking during your history classes, it will be a good reminder of key people, dates, and events of nazism and WWII.

But most importantly, I hope it will surface some contradictions between what "feels right" to you and what you actually end up doing, especially at work. It's not a fun book, it's a book that will make you THINK.

marathon, smart "run or focus app" script for X

I wanted a way to switch between applications that would be quicker/leaner than Alt-Tab, so I created a simple script to do just that:

run an app if not running
focus it if already running

If you are reading this, it is because your browser does not support the 'video' element. Try with Firefox or Chrome.

Combined with GNOME keyboard shortcuts, that means you're always one keypress away from your beloved firefox/gedit/terminal/<insert-your-favorite-app-here>. Awesome.

It's called marathon, 'coz it's a smart runner, and it's on GitHub. Depends on wmctrl and has a few quirks, read the README.

redesigned Ossandust website

Same old story: one month ago, while buying some weird music/computer hardware, I thought the website was ugly. So I tried to give it some love, the author liked my redesign, and now, ta-da, it's live:

I tried to use cool new css3 stuff (shadows & animation) while keeping the whole as simple and straightforward as possible. Bitmaps were done using Inkscape, the html/css was done with a mighty text editor.

Again, I'm not claiming this joke of a homemade mixing should be taken as an example, these are my two very first albums and I had no mixing experience whatsoever before attempting them. Hi there.

Thursday 8^th July 2010 was the day I did my first solo concert. It happened at Le Dock in Grenoble, and I'm very proud of it: felt good, the audience response was fantastic, and the smiles on the photos speak for themselves.

Lots of laughs, lots of fun, lots of confidence about my music possibilities in live, lots of new big ideas ~~(don't get any)~~. Mountains of thankyous to my friends who were there; see you soon.

redesigned UPX website

One month ago, when blabbering about UPX, I mentioned the UPX logo was ugly, and said I was "on my way for a logo proposal". So I began with the logo, then wondered if I could also give some love to their website.

The authors liked my redesign, and now, ta-da, it's live:

I tried to keep the original spirit as much as possible (single-page, purple, simple). The logo was made using Inkscape, and the html/css was done with a mighty text editor. Props go to Brett Alton for the original css/html layout, which was a pleasure to tweak.

Disk space is cheap, but there are still situations where you'd like to reclaim space.
For me, one of them is getting the maximum of the free Dropbox account I use to synchronize my applications between work and home --hey, don't say my sysadmin I do this, he'd get a heart attack from the sole thought of a virus among my tools collection--.
Of course {zip/rar}ing everything is a no-go; nobody wants to have to open an archive before being to launch an application. So what?

Phew. My second article for gHacks is online. It's called "How to use Autotrash to totally forget about the trash" and talks about a nifty Linux application that saves you from the hurdle of caring about the trash:

The trash (or “Recycle bin”) is a sane concept of our operating systems. A file sent to the trash can be recovered if the user realizes the file was still needed after all. Now, the problem is: when should you empty the trash?
If you never empty it, it grows and wastes valuable disk space
If you empty it frequently, you lose its buffer benefits for recovery. Plus, who likes frequently doing this highly manual task?
Finally, if like me, you get bored by this nonsense, you end up permanently bypassing the trash (with systematic Shift+Delete instead of Delete), which is of course very dangerous

Great-looking {screenshots | videos | demos} is a minimum when evaluating software products. When, after tests and demos and various assessments, your pen approches the sheet to finally tick the functional checkbox, remember one thing to ask to the vendor wooing you: "Your product demo looks great, but now hand me your keyboard, leave the room, and let me have an unbiased look on my own"

Because even without access to the source, a quick glance like this one can reveal a lot:

"Ooooooooh, myriads of .vbs files doing the installation/updating. Hello, is this 2010?"
or "Well, the user UI may be fine, but I'm not exactly fond of administrative interfaces implemented in 1995-ish gray unresizable nested multi-tabbed Java applets using Comic Sans and GIF exports of pixelated MS cliparts"
or "Are these four different UI frameworks for the same object-listing purpose? My little finger tells me someone didn't to its integration homework when buying competitors"
or "Wow, the lawyer responsible for your EULA would have done a great job defending this dictator on trial I just saw on TV"

and the list goes on and on.

Before I go on, two facts to temper my musings:

As a hobbyist programmer, I know that complexity means hairy stuff growing here and there. If perfection exists somewhere, it is certainly not in software.
Also, the result matters more that the means; a useless program coded in the awesomest language with top-notch libraries and using the greatest package management techniques remains useless.

Still, this sanity check is one possible first step to evaluate the quality of a software product, and to better understand the application your company is about to sell one kidney for. This dust under the rug will be a great set of clues to start with, and will also give you technical points for further negotiation with your reseller.

A friend asks me: "why don't you write in French?"

I'm french, living in a french-speaking city, and most of my readers are french. Actually, I'm probably losing readership because of English.

My answer is extremely simple: I. Love. Writing. In. English. Call it bland and emotionally weak, but it lets me crystallize thoughts into something denser and more direct than anything I could do with french and its intricacies.

All the articles exposed here spent weeks as drafts, sometimes months. After the first version, I come back from to time to time and trim as much as I can. Reformulate. Simplify. Rework. Enrich. I totally get my kick from this and, no, I don't give a damn about the "death of the french language". Not that I don't care, just that it isn't dying.

facebook is no email

Please, stop using facebook as your primary communication medium.

Yes, in some aspects, facebook is more convenient than email. For example, you never have to worry about outdated email addresses, there is a searchable directory, and this nice profile picture reassures your mom she's writing to her beloved son.

If you are in this case, this means you prefer facebook pseudo-messaging to standard email because the mental evaluation matrix you built looks like this:

Well, I think this analysis is flawed. First, it fails to include some hidden costs and, secondly, facebook awesomeness is clearly not free (you pay with the personal information you reveal). Here is what my matrix looks like:

Of course your mileage may vary: each of us will put different weights inside the matrix, and each of us will add/remove some rows. Agreed, but my goal here is not to nitpick about details of the grid, merely to remind you about the grid.

Take some time and build yours. Each time you use one alternative or the other, you are casting a vote by forcing other people to comply with your choice. Are you sure facebook is the option you want to promote?

For those who want more, here are explanations of my grid:

Excessive aggregation (of personal data): government civil / social / health care databases are segregated not only because of technical limitations, but also by laws, to mitigate the impacts of data breaches. Facebook is the antithesis of data segregation, and will happily mix your messages with the other submitted personal data: photos, thoughts, pokes, connections, tastes, religious/politic/sexual orientations. Too much data in one's hands is not sane. Yes, it enables smarter systems, but it also represents a tremendous loss of control over your personal data.
Privacy: I know many of you will react to these thoughts with a dismissive "So what? I have nothing to hide". Are you sure? Again, I'll quote some Schneier here:
"We do nothing wrong when we make love or go to the bathroom. We are not deliberately hiding anything when we seek out private places for reflection or conversation. We keep private journals, sing in the privacy of the shower, and write letters to secret lovers and then burn them. Privacy is a basic human need."
What would you say if somebody was permanently peering at you in all these conditions? Well, that's what facebook is doing all the time with your online activity to "improve the quality" of the services it provides.
Note: yes, the linked article may be fake. Still, it raises some very probable points and many are just plain evident for technical reasons.
Hackability/accessibility: only facebook can define/modify the way it is used, whereas an open standard like the email can be built upon. For example, it is currently impossible to answer to facebook messages via email (that may change when facebook unveils its 'Titan' email interface). This is obviously by design (in order to force you to use the full-blown web interface), and it is impossible for a non-facebook employee to hack his way around. Facebook is a control freak who, in addition to owning your data, wants to control the way you use it.

I mentioned this some years ago, but it bears repeating: RIEN is the awesomest instrumental rock band. Ever. I'd almost kick the "instrumental" qualificative, but there is Radiohead.

richard "prioritization" stallman

Even if the guy has his weirdnesses (but which genious doesn't?), I've always admired Richard "rms" Stallman for his uncompromised integrity. As Gruber puts it, say what you want about him but he walks the walk.

But after watching [fr] the discussion RMS held about [fr] his biography, I find myself reconsidering the reasons of my admiration. For integrity is not a quality, it is one of the perceived results of intrinsical qualities.
Seth Godin has integrity because of his constancy in delivering insightful thoughts. Barack Obama's comes from his ambitious vision. 37signals owe it to their attitude and impeccable execution.

To me, RMS integrity comes as a result of a mix of rigour, stubbornness, but above all, prioritization.

The available free UNIX toolkits suck but UNIX licensing sucks harder, so he'll create his own implementation under free licenses.
Computers with free BIOS suck, but proprietary BIOS suck harder, so he'll settle with a weird netbook equipped with low-end hardware till better free alternatives emerge.
Etc.

No wonder why it is so difficult for the press to discuss with him: in a world full of compromises, workarounds and half-solutions, the guy makes none. Don't even expect the glimpse of a reasoning about a subject high on his priority table, you'll get the most terse answer of your journalist life and your question will be instantly moved to /dev/null. All this with a fresh smile from within a huge beard.

Have an enemy; make no compromises. So far, it seems to have worked pretty well for him.

your product is not a product

Or if it is, well, you failed. Does your mother call you her "product"? No, so if your company produces copying machines, be proud of it, and call your product a copying machine. Your product does more than that? Great, then find a new name, call it by the model name, whatever. But don't call it a "product" to the eyes of your customers.

Below is a photo of the home screen of the copier I used at my former job.

Let's have a look at some of the words here: "service... WorkCentre 7335... this product enables... proceeding... various operations that may include sending emails and faxes... under an electronic form... depending... installed services... chosen button... select a service."

What. A. Mess. To me it looks more like some unknown alien artifact than a copier.

Use case: Zbigniew the contract manager wants to copy this damn contract he finalized after dozens of phone calls, hours of meetings and mountains of emails. He should have a giant face on his smile when the copier welcomes him warmly to this easy task. Instead,

The copier blathers weird words totally irrelevant to the action of copying/scanning a document: "Select... service... product enables... various operations... under an electronic form... button to select a service".
Then, this stupid machine isn't even conscious of its capabilities. Heck, it even uses conditional sentences: "This product enables [...] operations that may include [...], depending on the installed services."
M. copier gives its name. How charming. A good beginning to fire a human relationship, but hey, you're a machine.
To do the damn copy, Zbigniew has to click a smallish icon, whereas there there are lots of unused space right below

What if we made Zbigniew happy?

In addition to fixing the points listed above,

The name of the printer (possibly more, like IP address, SMTP server, and troubleshooting stuff for sysadmin) could be displayed when "Technical information" is pressed. Normal users don't need this information displayed all the time.
The blue space could be used for subtle branding (a logo would look nice in a grayer shade of blue)

Additional requirements? Yes, nothing comes for free (for more on this, see the fabulous blog of Wil Shipley):

Need to adapt the layout and the size of the buttons to the number of services available.
(Possible) need to develop the additional "Technical info." screen. Possible because maybe displaying the printers name wasn't necessary in the first place, let alone a full diagnosis/troubleshooting screen.
And (the most complicated in my experience) need to fight to prevent clutter from creeping back. The various people involved in the design of the screen fear change, often to the point that they will promote status quo and will have to be convinced these changes benefit Zbigniew.

And that's what I fight for. A humble task, if you ask me.

Here’s the pitch: you work for ACME Inc, supplier of fine hand-crafted purple chair wheels since 1471. You and a potential client share good vibes that could lead to a juicy contract. Everything is fine in the best of the worlds, then you realize the client is also talking with one of yours competitors, EVIL Inc. Ohmygod.

Of course there is the vast subject of corruption, but that's not my point here; I'm always surprised to see how often these dated methods are used:
- Bitch about the competitor without logical reasoning: “We’ve heard EVIL Inc. is evil, don’t sleep with them”
- Make the client feel guilty: “We did everything for you! What did we do wrong? What makes you go elsewhere?”
- Serve your worst sticky brownish bullshity corporate sauce: “Unlike EVIL Inc, ACME Inc values customer satisfaction above all, never gonna let-you-down, blah blah”

For all of them: DON’T. To the latest news, capitalism is about free competition, meaning your selling key point is none of the above, it is “be valuable and bring to the client what he wants”. If you honestly think you're more valuable, show it, prove it. If needed, shift the debate towards a more favorable axis.
What I described above belongs to our early recreation grounds. It is business-spam, and we all hate spam. Do this and my inner Bayesian filter will automagically blacklist you. Said differently, please compete in honest direct terms or go live in the mountains.

All of the above could be obvious for you. I thought that too, then learnt that it’s not for lots of people, learnt to recognize it when it surfaces and learnt to politely refuse such behavior.

Quick note related to my last entry about defiance: I could endlessly argue here about how much of what I perceived is a question of wealthiness, or Swiss specifities, etc. And still seem bland and naive.

The fact it, that was just not my point. As the last paragraph points out, "where I wanted to bring you to and where I'll stop" is not the few --certainly debatable, possibly naive-- byproducts of my thoughts. I'm no sociologist, and have a long way to go before being able to tackle such a complex subject in a short entry like a blogpost.
Where I wanted to bring you to is a book. A fantastic book backed by hard data that I read months ago, whose conclusions were revived by a trip to France. I hope some of you will read it and appreciate it as much as I did.

Anyway, thanks for your mail feedback, ideas, suggestions, punches and other high kicks about this post. Much appreciated. Really.

One word suffices to sum up my trip to France of a Frenchman living in Switzerland for one year: defiance.

Till now I didn't have a lot to say to the "so what is Switzerland like?" of my friends and relatives. Switzerland (Geneva actually), is apparently so similar to France that I mostly answered clichés for the sake of answering something.
Till now because now I know what I will answer: Swisses are human beings living their lives, unlike the wild animals known as Frenchmen.

Arriving in Geneva from France isn't something dramatically different and I hardly noticed any change. It is only coming back to France that you can fully understand a key component flowing in France veins, something you progressively forget living in Switzerland: defiance.

I define it this way: defiance in behavior is the permanent need for unproductive challenging and provocation.
Now you may think "uh, there is nothing wrong with challenge and provocation", and you're right. But what I mean here is not positive nor engaging challenge like entrepreneurship, engaged art or politics. It is permanent useless nitpicking, it is aggressive provocation with no benefit, it is the incapacity of simply living in peace in society without restless comparison to others.

This comes after a weekend in France spent walking in the city from friends place to friends place. And even in a not-so-big city like Grenoble, the following is painfully obvious: mistrust towards others passers-by, disrespect of shopkeepers, groups mocking out loud other people, guys aggressively begging for cigarettes. The simple aggressive expressions of many just gives me nausea.
Does it have to be this way? Nope, during the last ten months in Switzerland, none of this happened. Not to say at all I'm living in a candy world; the fact is Swiss are just living their life peacefully and have nothing to prove. Not to say either that it is a bland world with no taste since Geneva has lots of remarkable artists and places to hang out that are all but mean and mild.

So what?

First, I'm pretty certain not to be totally naive: this is definitely not a question of wealthiness. Yes, Geneva is one of the richest places on earth. But also, I felt way more oppressed in Grenoble than I did for example in many poor South America cities. And contrarily, I fear the next time I'll have to stop by Paris.
"Swiss neutrality"? The "Swiss military system" forging brave good citizens? Read some Geneva demographics to realize that Geneva is not Swiss, then forget about it.
It is a symptom, not a cause. Behavioral defiance is the result of the erosion of a sane behavior in a context of economic, politic and corporate defiance. As such, this should be the entry point of any attempt to curb it in France. And this is where I wanted to bring you and where I'll stop because everything that I could say on this subject won't hold up to an excellent essay from Yann Algan & Pierre Cahuc called La société de défiance : Comment le modèle social français s'autodétruit ? It is very concise, readable and well supported by statistics and facts. If you shared some insights while reading this post and can read french, go buy and read this book. You won't regret it.

I'm doing some PHP work for a personal project, and --damnit--, though I've a working Eclipse / PDT / Zend debugger setup, I'm still not happy about debugging possibilities compared to a local app.

And since it seems everybody else online finds PDT so great, I'm now suspecting a typical PEBKAC case (said differently, I think I'm not using PDT properly). HALP!

Right, please focus on personal documents. Go on.
    “Hmmm. I currently have: some school reports, a letter to my insurance, documents from my mom, and my resume”

Still don’t get my point? Most people will end up attaching it to their keychain, which is equivalent to attaching a small note mentioning “hello, this is my address; feel free to visit my house” to whoever finds the lost keychain.

This key is a security disaster because it suggests to bring at the same place a token and detailed information about what the token opens. Usually, losing your houses key is no big deal since the lock it opens is secret, because a key looks like another key. Here we are breaking this information asymmetry between you and an attacker about the question “what does this key open?”.

Unless?
- Unless you encrypt the whole volume, but these keys are for easy data exchange, aren't they? Having to install TrueCrypt on a friend’s pc just to copy a video file seems a bit overkill to me, defeating the purpose of “easy data exchange”.
- Unless you are reeaaally careful about what you put into the key, but that seems pretty impossible to me. You know that one day or another you will end up with some document identifying you.

Edit Dec.5th 2009: hello Lifehacker commenters. Some nice alternative solutions were suggested in the LH comments. Note the two "unless" points mentioned above remain valid, but these solutions are good in-betweens.
- create 2 partitions: a small (some MB) partition in order to just host the TrueCrypt binaries, used then to access to the bigger (encrypted) partition
- create 2 partitions of mostly the same size: one for non-personal documents and binaries (including TrueCrypt) and one for personal documents

So here you are, ten minutes later, on a random Wikipedia page, which apparently answers your questions about this weird acronym. You took what the encyclopedia gave you. On the way, you may have noted a header mentioning that "The neutrality of this article is disputed", or "This article needs additional citations for verification". But you simply did not care. "Meh".

You really should.

We all access to multiple information mediums: web, tv, magazines, newspapers, people. But the medium is not my point here; my point is about nuancing each instance of a medium.

Back to Wikipedia. Several facts can easily mislead the occasional web wanderer:

The occasional web wanderer looks for info on Google, and Google promotes Wikipedia pages way more than a standard PageRank weighting would normally do (which promotes pages that lots of people refer to). If a Wikipedia page of what you're looking for does exist, be sure it's in the first three results.
Wikipedia is so huge that you can basically ask him anything (did I say "him"? Aaargh; they got me). An information hypermarket making you forget specialized information resellers.
Wikipedia ends with "pedia" (uh).

To sum up, Wikipedia is so ubiquitous, massive, and authoritative that you forget to remember it's not an Oracle. Just a clever database edited by 9,613,340 people like you and me as of today (--including-- me, and now you're scared).

But unlike Clint, who fortunately has no built-in disambiguation feature, all Wikipedia objects (articles, but also editors) have "Discussion" and "History" pages (see the tabs at the top of each page: Article... Discussion... Edit... History).

And that's how you read Wikipedia: you not only look at the picture, you clickety-click between these tabs and understand how the photo was taken. Who chose the framing, the exposure, how the focus was made, under which weather conditions, etc.

"Reading" sole Wikipedia articles is like pretending knowing all about a meeting by reading the written minutes of the meeting. No matter how brilliant the minutes are, they will always be a dumbed-down version of the epic fights that occured in the conference room.

Today precisely, I was discussing with a colleague some mail-related features. At some point we stumbled upon an "undo" feature for mail.
- As a normal user, his position was "I can undo any action on my computer, and I should also be able to undo mail I sent"
- As a normal geek, my position was "Nah, the god --a.k.a. internet-founders-- approved standard smtp/whatever mail protocols don't include this possibility. Sending a mail is a no-way-back action". --- ... . --- ... . "Well" did I say; "except if you are on a corporate network which uses Microsoft Exchange, which allows such a "recall" feature. ... . But it's evil; forget it."

Well, once again (see the drunkmail labs feature), smarter-than-me Googlers had a better idea. Here is the official Googleblog description:

Turn on Undo Send in Gmail Labs under Settings, and you’ll see a new “Undo” link on every sent mail confirmation. Click “Undo,” and we’ll grab the message before it’s sent and take you right back to compose. This feature can't pull back an email that's already gone; it just holds your message for five seconds so you have a chance to hit the panic button.

Here is a possible way that could have lead to this fantastic feature.

PM: again, you're right, no way we reinvent a protocol, let's just be smart about what we have and what we want to acheive. What's the goal?

SmarterEngineer: I guess that would be realizing a shitty mail seconds after sending it.

PM-in-Eureka-mode: OK, we agree that mail is an asynchronous medium, and that nobody will ever complain about a mail being some seconds late?
PM: so what the hell on earth forbids us to simply delay mails by some seconds, allowing undo during this window?

PM: dear random-intern-present-at-this-meeting, you have two days to implement this trivial feature as a lab addon, which will be implemented if there's no complaint.

So here we are. Googlemail can undo email. Not exactly, but it's 99.9% as if. Meaning, once again, my todays lesson will be something like this:
Something impossible by design inside a virtual box is actually totally possible outside the box. Users are of course outside the box (the box doesn't mean anything to them; we IT guys are the only ones forcing them to stay in the box), it's our job to pull our head out of the box and imagine simple but standard ways to let them forget about it.

My thanks to the engineer/PM/team/whatever who initiated this simple but powerful idea.

That’s it. To all the people who {downloaded, liked, loved, disliked, criticized, shared, recommended} my music, once more: thanksthanksthanks. Please do it again. Pass it to your friends, your dad, your flatmates, that guy in the street, whoever you want.

Some questions came back frequently among the fantasbulous feedback, so I’ll answer here. For those who missed it, the WhoAmI.html file included in the archive answers some of these questions, and others.

Q: Who made this?
A: I did everything except the cover art, which is made by Tacha. “everything” is glockenspiel, guitar, lyrics, singing, recording, mixing.

Q: How long did it take? Where?
A: The songs were written between 2004 and 2008. I did the recording in November 2008, in my room in Grenoble.

Q: Great. Hope you’ll succeed!
A: I don’t hope any subsequent “success”. Publishing this work is the success I wanted. I recorded songs floating in my head before forgetting them, that’s all I need.

Q: What’s next? When?
A: As soon as possible, I hope in 2009. Will be great.

Q: Love it, but I don’t like the omnipresent glockenspiel.

C'est non seulement la première fois qu'une distribution linux touche un public aussi large, mais, alors que le constructeur aurait pu se contenter de mentionner Ubuntu qu'en tant qu'option, la distribution prend carrément la place de l'autre OS, qui n'est même pas mentionné. Sounds like a revolution?

Par pitié, mesdames mesdemoiselles messieurs, arrêtez d'utiliser la fonction de messagerie de Facebook pour envoyer des pseudo-mails. "Pourquoi ?" me siffle-t-on du rang du fond. OK forte tête,tu l'auras cherché :

D'une, à part pour les nerds qui lisent leur faceplouc huit fois par jour, comment est-on généralement mis au courant qu'on a reçu un message facebook ? Par mail. Ce qui revient donc à recevoir une lettre disant "hé, je t'ai envoyé une autre lettre dans ta boîte au lettres Schmurtz©® 2.0, va voir !". Shadokesque, non ?
Par ailleurs, qu'est-ce que je vois dans ma mailbox ?

Un message sans titre (tous les messages faceplouc s'appellent "xxx sent you a message on Facebook..."). Mis à part l'expéditeur présent au début du titre, on peut donc considérer ça comme du bruit. Note : facebook pourrait facilement changer ça au profit d'un format du type "[facebook] ".
L'expéditeur étant facebookmail, pas possible donc de faire de réponse directe. Là encore, facebook pourrait changer ça en définissant le Reply-to du mail.
Pour répondre à ce message, je suis obligé de cliquer sur un lien illisible, me logger, et répondre dans une boîte de 30pixels de large, en absorbant au passage la merveilleuse publicité ciblée de nos amis faceplouc, en plus de celle de ma boîte mail si celle-ci est web-based.
Si je veux retrouver les messages facebook de "machin", je dois rechercher sur le titre (cf. remarque ci-dessus), pas sur l'expéditeur.

Mais surtout et avant tout : en utilisant ce service, vous fragmentez vos échanges. Une partie par mail, une partie par facebook, une sur myspace, et ensuite, à qui le tour ? Quand, trois mois plus tard, je veux retrouver un vieux message, je cherche où ?

À un standard ouvert du web (le bête mail) reconnu et supporté, vous y préférez un système fermé, bâtard, aussi élégant et ergonomique qu'une brosse à chiottes taillée dans un rosier. Et je ne parle même pas de la politique douteuse de monsieur Facebouc quant à la confidentialité et la vie privée de ses utilisateurs.

Alors pour toutes ces raisons, non non et encore non, quittez moi cette interface bleue à deux balles et lancez votre client mail préféré.

No idea about you, but I -love- Jessica Hagy's concept and blog, indexed. I could spend hours thinking and laughing at these sketches. Hmmmmmm well actually, I do spend hours, huh.
Anyway. The fact is fresh paper is as always more exciting, so after my first read of the small extract she published recently (buy it, she deserves it), I couldn't help but make some.

I was in the train and the (cute) girl facing me was perfect to begin :

Mais qu'est-ce qui te passe par la tête ? Oui, toi là, avec ton profil Facebook et ses 86 applications pleines de smileys, de photos de toi défoncé, et de pintes de bière virtuelles que tes 286 amis t'auront "offert" ? Je n'aime pas faire le rabat-joie mais tu vas trop loin. Pause.
Facebook est né comme un réseau social visant à rassembler les diplômés de Harvard. Il s'est par la suite étendu aux universités américaines, et a maintenant largement dépassé ce cadre. Je lui dois des retrouvailles concrétisées real-life avec des amis de collège / lycée. Priceless comme dit la pub.
En ceci, cet outil est extrêmement efficace et valorisable, par l'inertie qu'il a gagné et la quantité incroyable de données qu'il contient et qui facilite les retrouvailles. Il existe sûrement plein de choses à dire sur les mérites réels de la plateforme, mais passons. Voici là où je veux en venir :

La merveille à droite est la première chose que l'on voit lorsqu'on recherche "nom d'une amie" et qu'on clique sur "Photos". Un appart saccagé avec un type visiblement pas à son mieux et l'amie en question dans un état indéterminé.
Ça a dû être une excellente crémaillère et je m'en réjouis pour eux, mais réfléchissez un instant. Qu'ai-je du faire pour accéder à ceci ? Une simple recherche d'un nom dans Facebook.
Qu'aurais-je à faire pour accéder à ceci dans quelques mois ? Une simple recherche dans n'importe quel moteur de recherche (l'indexation du contenu FaceBook par les moteurs de recherche a commencé).

Bref :

Le netcitizen lambda crée de plus en plus de contenu (images, texte, vidéos, commentaires, ...)
Ce contenu devient accessible de plus en plus facilement (moteurs de recherche de plus en plus puisssants, profils connectés entre eux, tagging de photos --mon préféré--, et j'en passe...)

Jusqu'ici, à moins d'être parano (auquel cas, exception faite des paranos cons, on ne met rien sur le web), tout le monde s'en fout. C'est bon esprit, pour les amis, non ? Non. Le fait est que d'autres personnes hors du cadre famille/amis peuvent s'intéresser à ces informations. Exemple.

Quel est le message transmis par les "causes supportées" de ce type inscrit à Facebook pour ses proches ? Un brave gars rigolo et amateur de houblon. Ambiance potache, le monde est beau.

A contrario, quel est le message que perçoit un recruteur hésitant, un fournisseur ou un client pas sûr de faire son achat lorsqu'il fait une recherche sur toi en espérant trouver des marques d'actions et de professionnalisme ? L'image d'un branleur fini. Voilà ce que l'application "Définissez-moi" nous dit sur cette même personne :

Qu'on ne me dise pas que je suis parano et que personne ne fait ce genre de recherche. Je sors d'entretien. Il n'y avait même pas de DRH dans les trois personnes à qui j'ai parlé, mais tous avaient fait un rapide recherche sur moi avant de venir.
J'ai passé dix bonnes minutes à définir ce qu'est pour moi un geek, précisément parce que je m'affirmais geek sur mon site web et que ça avait interpellé. J'ai été enchanté qu'on me demande des explications sur cette phrase volontairement provoc' qui m'a permis d'aborder des thèmes qui m'intéressent (un geek est un passionné de quoi que ce soit, qui a une connaissance pointue dans certains domaines, qu'il adore partager à qui se montre intéressé).
Cette phrase est une perche tendue et contrôlée qui me permet d'aborder des sujets qui m'intéressent.

Par contre, lorsque monsieur le recruteur tombe sur la photo ou tu es tout sourire avec le visage maquillé de rouge à lèvres, un chapeau ridicule et une bière à la main en train de faire vomir ta sublime conquête du dernier samedi soir, tu lui tends juste le bâton pour te faire frapper.

Loin de moi l'idée de plaider pour une aseptisation globale de ton profil, et je trouve que le surnom de "kéké le roi de la saucisse-frites" te va à ravir, mais je ne suis pas sûr que le rendre aussi visible aux yeux du monde soit une excellente idée. Tes amis te connaissent-ils si mal qu'il faut leur rappeler en détail ce que tu es (ou plutôt une image déformée de ce que tu es) dans une fenêtre de navigateur ? Ou ne vaudrait-il mieux pas réserver les espaces publics comme celui-ci à des fonctions utiles et honorables telles la recherche d'anciens amis, le couch surfing ou encore la drague ?

EDIT mars 2010: Bonjour à toi, lecteur qui as probablement trouvé ce post de novembre 2007 en cherchant "faceplouc" (serais-je l'inventeur de ce jeu de mots ? Gloire). Beaucoup d'eau a coulé sous les ponts depuis :

Facebook est de plus en plus utilisé et ses vices mieux connus
La médiatisation de gaffes / licenciements relatifs à Facebook a permis une prise de conscience des conséquences possibles d'une telle centralisation de données
Enfin, les paramètres de partage par défaut sont plus sains

Reste que ce billet est un rappel. Facebook a des bénéfices, mais aussi un coût. Faites gaffe à ce que vous y postez, il n'y a pas de fonction "supprimer" sur Internet.
J'ai depuis écrit d'autres articles sur le sujet, en français et en anglais.

Du moins s'il l'avaient fait exprès. What ? Et qui c'est "Ils" ?

"Ils" c'est Linksys, une division de Cisco Systems. Pour faire court, Cisco c'est le mastodonte mondial de l'infrastructure réseau. Switches, routeurs, stockage réseau, etc... Et Linksys c'est la division "home and small businesses" du monstre. Ils font ces routeurs, qui une fois connectés à une *box , partagent la connexion en WiFi.

Bon. En ce début de millénaire, pour trancher dans les coûts matériels du routeur WRT54G, Linksys décide de reporter certaines fonctions en logiciel et choisit une base Linux pour le firmware (le mini-logiciel qui pilote le routeur).
En 2002, Eben Moglen, professeur de droit et président du Software Freedom Law Center remarque la manoeuvre. Elle est illégale puisque le noyau Linux est basé sur la license GNU Public License (GPL). Illégale non pas parce que Cisco fait une utilisation commerciale de code GPL (ceci est tout à fait légal : au sens de la GPL, un logiciel libre n'est pas forcément gratuit). Par contre, la GPL oblige Linksys à publier le code source modifié sous license GPL (problème dit de Tivoisation). Voilà donc Linksys qui publie le code source.

Et alors ? Une armée d'übergeeks s'en empare et pond des miyards de firmwares modifiés plus fantasbuleux les uns que les autres. Ils ont le temps et n'ont pas les contraintes de segmentation de fonctionnalités sur la gamme des produits qu'impose maman Linksys. En termes de fonctionnalités, notre petit routeur à 50€ disposera de fonctions avancées d'un routeur à 500€.
Là où c'est intéressant et où je justifie le titre, c'est que, économiquement parlant :

L'utilisateur Lambda ne sait même pas ce que c'est qu'un firmware. Et à supposer qu'il en entende parler par le blog de doux débiles (hello), il hésitera à installer un firmware modifié (les pages d'aides insistent toujours lourdement sur les risques de détruire le routeur lors d'opérations de flashage). On a donc notre 1 : si Lambda achète un routeur à 50€, il restera routeur à 50€.
Le Geek (re-hello), lui, est tout excité et flashe son routeur à 50€ dans la seconde. On a donc un Geek qui gagne 450€ (=>content), et donc, plus important, 2 : Geek devient un apôtre qui fera de la pub à Linksys pour pas un rond.

Le résultat est le suivant :

De la publicité gratuite de qualité (le bouche-à-oreille n'est pas n'importe quelle publicité, d'autant plus que la parole du Geek est renforcée par sa position d'expert) sous prétexte de "routeur trop bien", alors qu'en fait, Lambda paye 50€ pour un routeur à 50€ qui n'a rien d'exceptionnel d'après 1.
Note : j'écarte le cas où Geek fait de la pub ET paramètre le routeur de Lambda car ce cas est perdu après quelques degrés de bouche-à-oreille. Notre Lambda initial tire le conseil de Geek, qui pourra faire l'opération. Mais dès le premier degré de Lambda-Lambda, c'est moins évident.
Note 2 : "gratuite", pas vraiment car on perd 450€ par Geek. Mais mon petit doigt me dit qu'ils sont très minoritaires. Peanuts pour Linksys, donc. [edit-relecture] Ou pas ? Je vais peut-être vite sur le point là mais faute de données je ne peux que supposer.
Mieux que de la publicité au niveau produit, un regain en image pour la marque : lorsque Geek dit "mon Linksys WRT54G est trop bien", vous croyez vraiment que Lambda va retenir WRT54G ? Il va à la Fnac et demande un routeur Linksys à un vendeur qui ne cherchera pas à savoir pourquoi et lui filera le premier venu.
De la discrimination tarifaire (économiquement, faire payer à différents acheteurs des prix différents pour le même produit, lisez éconoclaste !). Un saint Graal des économistes qui, sous un nom qui fait peur, peut être une pratique qui arrange vendeur et acheteur (pensez à votre carte 12-25 ou aux packs Office étudiants, et --chienne de vie, je commence déjà à me répéter-- lisez éconoclaste).
Le non-initié ou l'administrateur (pour qui le coût du temps passé à bidouiller son routeur est trop élevé) ayant besoin d'un routeur doté de fonctions exotiques paie 500€. Mais ami Geek, pour toi : on change le nom du routeur, il garde toutes ses fonctionnalités et ne coûte plus que 50€.

Merci Linksys, merci Eben, merci la communauté donc.
Et ... [oups, l'heure tourne] dans un prochain épisode faudra traiter le problème "pourquoi ronj bloggue-t-il depuis 1h alors qu'il a un rapport de stage à finir pour le lendemain?". Re-chienne de vie.

La promo 2010 de mon école fait sa rentrée. Ce qui implique que lorsqu'on me demande en quelle année je suis, je dois maintenant répondre "troisième année". Ajoutez mon premier "bon ben moi je dois y aller, je bosse demain" quand les djeunz terminent la préchauffe pour commencer vraiment leur soirée, et je me sens vieux.

Des ami(e)s et des expériences ont transformé mes deux dernières années en une journée ensoleillée et, au lieu de m'en créer d'autres, j'ai peur d'un petit nuage. Quel con.

S'il y a bien un sujet qui me rebute dans les discussions d'incultes comme moi mais que j'aime voir abordé par des connaisseurs qui vont plus loin qu'une analyse café-de-commerce, c'est bien l'économie.

Je peux remercier --comme il aimait à le dire lui-même-- "une ordure, un pourri, un salaud, enfin... Robert Renaut", émérite prof qui assurait l'initiation à l'économie de naïfs élèves de seconde dont moi.
À vrai dire je m'étonne de ne rien trouver sur le net à son propos tellement il excellait dans les explications (presque) rigoureuses dépassant les clichés socioéco. Ceux l'ayant connu passant par là ont peut-être bondi à la dernière phrase et pourront rappeler ses grand moments de cynisme et de pessimisme politisé où les pincettes laissent place au "lance-grenade, fusil à plasma et mines de proximité" (je cite toujours).

N'empêche que j'apprécie chez les plus brillants cette capacité à faire abstraction de leur milieu "sale" (j'entends par là qu'on dit rarement ceci d'un physicien, alors que ces bidouilleurs du dollar globalisé sont facilement jetés dans la case "pourriture") pour se concentrer de façon non pas désabusée mais réaliste sur ce qu'ils savent faire avec du tact et en prenant les précautions nécessaires. Juste comme un bon physicien en fait.
Et juste comme avec les bons physiciens, il faut essayer de garder un peu de distance et se rappeler que la rhétorique n'est jamais très loin, mais je préfère entendre ça que les raccourcis qu'emprunte le non-avisé autour d'une table.

Et alors ? Allez faire un tour chez les éco-comparateurs et éconoclaste, vous trouverez de tout ça.

J'en ai marre de recevoir des message de pub / malware envoyés par des zamis qui se sont fait véroler leur MSN miteux. À moins d'utiliser la fonction webcam (et si oui c'est sûrement ponctuellement), Pidgin fait tout en mieux.

Pidquoi ? Un logiciel de messagerie instantanée permettant de se connecter au réseau msn, et qui est à MSN/Live Messenger ce que Firefox est à IE : une excellente alternative bien plus utilisable, efficace, épurée (adieu les pubs), sécurisée, et surtout qui "just work".

Faites du bien à tout le monde, installez Pidgin (le site est en anglais, mais oui le programme est traduit en français). Et amis sous Mac, direction Adium (le noyau Pidgin avec une jolie interface).

Note : si vous vous demandez ce que c'est que ce nom bizarre, "Le terme de pidgin (nom masculin) désigne différentes langues véhiculaires simplifiées créées sur le vocabulaire et certaines structures d'une langue de base, en général européenne (anglais, français, espagnol, etc.)". Un langage que tout le monde comprend. Mignon tout plein pour un client IM, hein ?

La team de l'ex-meilleur magazine musical français (et je pèse mes mots) sera de retour mi-octobre.
Joie, bonheur, félicité et rhhaaaaaaaaa que ces monuments d'ouverture d'esprit (trax est à la base un mag orienté musiques électroniques mais ça a bien changé) et de sincérité retrouvent le chemin de mon buraliste.

Pour les non-connaisseurs, la parution du mag a cessé depuis quelques mois et la proposition de reprise de l'actuelle rédaction a été refusée. Mystère sur le nom, les conditions, la maison qui éditera le nouveau bébé, mais plus d'infos bientôt.

Réponse pour ce soir : n'importe quoi. Explication : une soirée comme tant d'autres, calé dans un parc à gratouiller 6 cordes, en compagnie d'une trentaine d'étudiants. Un policier me fait signe et me dit de venir.

Lui : "Monsieur, on va vous confisquer votre guitare"
Moi : "Heu ... bonsoir, je ne comprends pas"
Lui : "C'est la troisième fois qu'on passe et qu'on vous dit de faire moins de bruit"
Moi : "Désolé mais je ne suis pas au courant, l'info n'a pas du circuler, mais OK on arrête la zik"
Lui : "Non non, je vous dit qu'elle est confisquée"

Je suis conscient que ça n'a rien d'exceptionnel ou palpitant mais c'est la première fois que ça m'arrive d'être en proie à ce genre de discrimination minable, et je réalise à quel point c'est agaçant. D'autant plus qu'après concertation, ils n'avaient absolument pas demandé deux fois auparavant.

Conclusion (?) : il faut rester à la maison, il ne faut pas jouer de musique, et les musiciens sont sûrement de dangereux toxicomanes.

Monseigneur JB me confiait cet après midi toute sa peine de ne pouvoir télécharger les chansons du dimanche. Damned vidéos en streaming sur Myspace. Hé ben non, il ne peut pas. Par contre : un geek et ses outils soigneusement collectionnés en sont tout à fait capables.

Donc pour JB et pour ceux qui veulent, j'ai uploadé tout ça. Ça se passe ici. Afin de fournir une expérience optimale, cher lecteur, vous trouverez :

... alias Beastie Boys. Je suis soufflé par les extraits (dégottés sur radiolibre, mangez-en) de leur prochain album à sortir en 2007 . Pour pas mal, les Beastie sont d'excellents MCs, mais ce que beaucoup ignorent c'est que ce sont aussi d'excellents instrumentistes.
Et alors ? Leur prochain album s'appellera "The mix-up" et sera instrumental, comme "The in sound from way out", sorti en 1996, une tuerie de funk/rock trippant.

Spool.fm, le lecteur audio online qui va bien

Jusque là j'utilisais radio.blog.club lorsque je cherchais à écouter rapidos une musique. Le roi est mort, vive Spool.fm. Ultra rapide, affichage de la pochette, dynamique car AJAXifié tout plein, simple, création de playlists par drag'n'drop, et y'a même une fonction pour écouter avec un ami ce qu'on écoute. Pourvu qu'ça dure.

Merci à Bertrand pour m'avoir fait découvrir cet excellent album en libre téléchargement. Ca s'appelle "Requiem pour des baroqueux" du collectif grenoblois Rien. Il a déjà été largement chroniqué.

Ce que j'en dis c'est que yabon : ça va de collages de répliques de Dallas à du spoken word en passant par du xylophone, le tout pris en sandwich entre le fameux Requiem, monument de postrock contrasté et tendu comme je l'adore, coupé en 22min au début et 13min à la fin.

Conseil aux non-geeks

Parmi les quelques-uns qui lisent ce blog, j'ai remarqué que beaucoup checkaient le site manuellement (de temps en temps, on se dit tiens ptêt qu'il a posté quelque chose). Argh. Laissez-moi vous filer un chtit conseil : utilisez les flux rss ! Kézako ? Pour plus d'explications, direction Wikipedia, mais en abrégé c'est un moyen de s'abonner à une site moyennant un format standardisé nommé RSS.

Première étape : utilisez un navigateur pas trop vieux. Firefox, Internet Explorer 7 par exemple. Ensuite, sur les pages qui le supportent (la plupart des blogs et pas mal de sites de news), un logo apparaîtra (dans la barre d'adresse sous Firefox, dans la barre d'outils sous IE7). Cliquez dessus et abonnez vous. Il sera ajouté à vos favoris / marque-pages, comme un élément dynamique. C'est à dire que c'est votre navigateur qui se chargera de rafraîchir ce lien périodiquement, ce qui vous permettra de voir facilement les news dès leur arrivée. Simple, non ?

Note : je vous présente la méthode la plus facile mais il existe des tonnes de lecteurs de flux. Parmi les plus importants : Thunderbird (le client mail qui va bien avec Firefox), Netvibes (une page d'accueil web personnalisable), ou encore Google Reader (web lui aussi, celui que j'utilise).

Je reviens tout juste du concert de Jude à la Maison de la Musique de Meylan. En adjectifs, en évitant les excellentissime, fantasbuleux et autres dantesque bien gentils mais qui font pas vraiment avancer le schmilblick : magique, planant, optimiste, rêveur.

Autant ses albums sont, avouons-le, vraiment tristes et mélancoliques (mais ça reste très beau tant qu'il ne verse pas dans la pop mielleuse ... y'a deux albums dont je suis vraiment pas fan), autant j'ai du garder le même sourire niais pendant les 3h de concert.

Jude fait son chemin avec une aisance hallucinante entre sa sèche, son électrique et le piano, toujours seul mais toujours aussi habité et vivant. Il joue avec le public, lui raconte des histoires, boit une gorgée de thé (?), fait rire, se plaint faussement des éclairages, le tout avec une aisance qui fait plaisir à voir. Le bonhomme est dans son élément...
... que ce soit lorsqu'il chante Indian Lover (3ème chanson de son set qui est pourtant normalement orienté dernier album, il a dû humer que j'allais la demander)
... que ce soit sur une chanson country totalement déjantée dont il raconte la genèse (à base de manager qui l'envoie prendre l'air à Nashville, ville de nombreux songwriters notamment monsieur Cash)
... que ce soit lorsqu'il termine son set par Crazy de Gnarls Barkley (fanboy inside c'est wam qui ai demandé cette reprise que j'avais entendue dans une session acoustique de VOX devenu radiolibre) pour finalement enchaîner sur des reprises au piano de tubes dancefloor en râlant sur l'ingé-son pour avoir "more reverb, I want it reaaaaally really fat".

Bref, même si vous aimez moyennement ses albums, n'hésitez pas une seconde à le voir en concert.
